Unidentified assailants in Algeria have reportedly killed 11 government soldiers in an overnight ambush in a forest southwest of the capital Algiers.

Although the deadly assault, reported Saturday by the local El Khaber newspaper, has not yet been confirmed by the Algerian defense ministry, it was widely circulated on news websites.

According to the report, the armed ambush was carried out on Friday night as the Eid al-Fitr holidays, marking the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, got underway in the Muslim state.

Citing security sources, the Algerian daily further said that the attack occurred on the road to Tifran, a wooded region south of Ain Defla city, 140 kilometers southwest of the capital.

Another report of the attack emerged later, citing an unidentified Algerian police commander that spoke on condition of anonymity.

The report further said the troops killed by the assailants were part of an army unit that was en route to an advance post in the wooded area, and that the militants managed to get away before army reinforcements arrived.

The development came following a statement released last week by the Algerian defense ministry, saying that more than 100 armed militants have been killed, captured in the first half of 2015.

According to the military’s account, more than 100 armed militants were also killed throughout 2014.
