The White House has said “99% of the world” support the accord reached between the P5+1 group and Iran and that US allies in the Middle East, including "the Saudis", can “speak for themselves” on the agreement.
After more than two weeks of marathon talks, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries - the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany – announced the conclusion of nuclear negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on Tuesday.
The agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), will put limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the removal of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
“This is an agreement that is enthusiastically supported by, as the president said, 99% of the International community,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during a press briefing on Friday.
“If you look at the population of the countries that are represented in this particular agreement, the vast majority, the 99% of the world, is on the side of the United States and our international partners in implementing this agreement,” he added.
“The Germans, the British, the French, certainly the president, the Chinese, the Russians, the South Koreans, the Japanese, the Indians,” and many other countries support the accord, he noted.
When asked by a reporter about the percentage of US allies in the Middle East that back up this accord, Earnest said “I’ll let them all speak for themselves”.
Answering the reporter’s question on, in particular, Saudi Arabia, he said “I’m telling you that the Saudis will speak for themselves”.
Earnest also warned Congress that voting against the historic conclusion would damage US ‘standing’ in the world.
“For the United States, because of a congressional action, to isolate our country on such an important issue, would be devastating to our standing in the world,” he said.
“The fact is, if the United States Congress were to successfully kill this agreement, it would have a terrible impact on the standing of the United States in the world, this is an agreement not just between the United States and Iran, this is an agreement between the United States, Russia, China, Germany, the UK and France and Iran,” he noted.
