Three policemen killed in Afghanistan bomb attack
At least three policemen have been killed in a bomb explosion in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, officials say.
Local officials said the blast targeted a police checkpoint in the city of Lashkargah in Helmand on Wednesday.
Provincial public health officials say the incident also left at least four other policemen wounded.
Police spokesman Nabi Jan Mullah Khel also confirmed the incident, saying that the policemen were attacked in the Ahmad Wali Khan area.
Although no group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, such acts are usually suspected to be carried out by Taliban militants.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement that Afghan forces had launched operations in a number of areas across the country, killing 22 Taliban militants and injuring 9 others. Three militants were also reportedly arrested.
The operations were carried out in areas including the provinces of Takhar, Kunduz, Nimroz, Paktika, and Zabul, as well as the cities of Herat and Kandahar.
Helmand is one of the main strongholds of Taliban in southern Afghanistan and has been the scene of deadly fighting as government forces continue their operations against the militants in the region.
Fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban has intensified since the militants launched their so-called annual spring offensive against Afghan forces and foreign embassies in April.
Although the Taliban were removed from power after the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001, many areas in the country are still witnessing insecurity as a result of militant activities.
