Bomb attacks kill 1, injure 13 in southern Thailand

At least one person has been killed and over a dozen others wounded in Thailand in a string of bombings that hit two militancy-riddled provinces in the country’s south, authorities say.

The bombings targeted a bank and restaurants in Thailand’s southern provinces of Songkhla and Narathiwat on Saturday, police spokesman General Prawut Thavornsiri told reporters.

The only victim was a woman who lost her life after a bomb-laden motorcycle exploded near a bank in the southern district of Sadao in Songkhla Province.

Police were at the scene investigating the incident that happened in the early morning hours of Saturday.

At least 13 people were also injured in the bombings, police said.

No person or group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Several rebel groups are fighting the Thai government for more autonomy for the ethnically-Malay region in southern Thailand. About 6,000 people have died since the conflict began in 2004.

Thailand is currently ruled by the junta, which seized power on May 22, 2014 following months of anti-government protests and violence in the country. General Prayuth Chan-ocha, the Thai Prime Minister, who took control of the country then, vowed last year to end the conflict by this year.
