Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he would “bomb the hell out of” Iraq’s oil fields to defeat the ISIL terrorist group, if elected president.
The billionaire real-estate magnate, currently polling in second place among Republican primary voters, said he would be “so tough” with ISIL by targeting various oil sites controlled by the terrorists.
“I would bomb the hell out of those oil fields. I wouldn’t send many troops because you won’t need them by the time I’m finished,” Trump said in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday night.
Before announcing his White House bid last month, Trump bragged that he knew how to destroy the ISIL group in Iraq and Syria, but would not give his military secrets away to the enemy.
The ISIL Takfiri group reportedly made $100 million last year through the illegal sale of oil.
Senator Lindsey Graham, another contender for the Republican presidential nomination, elaborated on his strategy towards ISIL.
Calling Iraq and Syria a "single battle space," the senator from South Carolina said Wednesday he would deploy around 10,000 troops in Syria to eradicate the heart of the terrorist group.
In remarks before The Atlantic Council, Graham said measures like arming the Kurds to fight the terrorists were insufficient.
“Does anyone really believe the Kurds have the capability, the will and the desire to go and liberate Syria?” Graham asked.
The senator has previously proposed placing 10,000 troops in Iraq.
"You will never bring stability to Iraq unless you deal with the Syrian safe havens," he said Wednesday. "If Syria is not addressed, it's going to take Lebanon and Jordan down with it.”
Observers say that while the US and its allies claim they are fighting against terrorist groups like ISIL, they in fact helped create and train those organizations to wreak havoc in the Middle Eastern countries.
The ISIL terrorists, many of whom were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.
