Iran's national university students' volleyball team

The Russian national university students’ volleyball team has defeated Iran in straight sets at the 28th edition of Universiade in South Korea, and advanced to the quarterfinals.

On Tuesday, the Russians sealed their Pool B win by seeing off Iran 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-23) in a match played at the Yeomju Gymnasium in South Korea’s southwestern city of Gwangju.

The Russian side started the match with vim and vigor, and dug and spiked effectively throughout the first set. They went ahead as the opposite side tried to earn points, and won the set 25-22.

Russia kept its dominant performance in the second set of the game with some good attacks. Iran's reception was weak, and it was the Russian team that powered through and finished the second set at 25-18.

The Russians ultimately won the last set 25-23 and ended the game.

Iran was grouped with Canada, Russia and Switzerland in Pool B of the preliminary round of the tournament. In its previous match at the Yeomju Gymnasium on Monday, the Iranian outfit edged past Thailand 3-2.

Despite Tuesday's defeat, Iran's student volleyballers qualified for the quarterfinals. The team will take on Ukraine at 1:00 p.m. local time (0400 GMT) on Thursday in its quarterfinal showdown.

The 2015 Summer Universiade opened in Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14.

More than 9,000 student athletes and officials from over 170 countries are taking part in the championships.

Iranians athletes are in action across eight sports. They are competing in artistic gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, taekwondo, shooting, archery, athletics and rowing.
