Rouhani due in Russia to attend BRICS, SCO summits

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani will head for Russia to participate in two major summits of the BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Russian city of Ufa.

Rouhani will depart for Russia on July 9 for a two-day visit at the official invitation of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Iranians Presidential Office’s Deputy for Communications and Publicity Affairs Parviz Esmaeili said on Monday.

On the first day of his visit, the Iranian president will partake in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit as a special guest and will also deliver a speech, Esmaeili added.

He said Rouhani is also scheduled to address the SCO summit as a keynote speaker on the second day of his trip.

He noted that the Iranian president will also hold talks with the leaders of SCO and BRICS member countries.

The BRICS accounts for almost half of the world's population and about one-fifth of global economic output.

Iran has the observer status at the SCO, but the organization is awaiting the removal of sanctions on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program to accept it as a full-fledged member.

In May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said his country was in favor of promoting Iran’s membership in the SCO -- a Eurasian organization with China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan as its members.
