US State Dept. can’t find 15 emails by Clinton

The US State Department has not been able to track down in its records all or part of 15 work-related emails from Hillary Rodham Clinton's private server, officials say.

The emails, which were released on Monday by a House panel investigating the 2012 attack on the US diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, all predate the assault, the Associated Press cited officials as saying on Thursday.

They include scant words written by Clinton herself and consist of possible intelligence reports provided to Clinton by her longtime political confidant Sidney Blumenthal.

They also include letters from Blumenthal which contain media accounts about the killing of one of former Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi's sons, reports on internal politics among protestors in Libya as well as a report about the assassination of a former Gaddafi minister in Vienna.

The last email was sent on Aug. 28, 2012, two weeks before the attack, in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three colleagues were killed, took place.

The absence of the emails will raise new questions about former secretary of state’s use of a personal email account and server during her tenure and also about whether she has provided the department all of her work-related correspondence, as she claims she has.

"She has turned over 55,000 pages of materials to the State Department, including all emails in her possession from Mr. Blumenthal," said Nick Merrill, a Clinton campaign spokesman.

According to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the State Department informed the Select Benghazi Committee on Thursday that they are no longer confident that all of the emails had been provided.

They said Julia Frifield, the assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs, confirmed that 10 emails and parts of five others made public this week cannot be found in the department's records.

Clinton is the leading Democratic candidate for the 2016 US presidential election.
