Press TV has interviewed Lawrence Davidson, a professor at the West Chester University, in Pennsylvania, about recent remarks made by the Yemeni envoy to the United Nations, warning about a looming humanitarian disaster in Yemen as a result of the ongoing Saudi aggression.
A rough transcription of the interview follows.
Press TV: We have spoken about this humanitarian situation before; certainly, the solution to it seems simple enough in the sense that the Saudis need to at least lift the blockade. Will the UN be able to pressure the Saudis in that respect?
Davidson: I don’t think so. I think that the talks that were sponsored by the UN showed pretty clearly that the Saudis were not seriously interested in negotiating with the Houthis, and demanded that the Houthis essentially surrender all the territory that they have control or influence in, and that is simply one of those demands that can’t be met and so you just make it so that when you continue your aggression it seems like the other side has said no.
I don’t know what common ground the UN mediator was referring to. I’m not aware of any common ground between the parties.
Press TV: Right and you know the numbers are staggering obviously; 21 million people are in a dire humanitarian situation. How long can the world really ignore the situation?
Davidson: Well, forever! It has ignored Gaza for decades. I don’t think that the West for instance is going to intervene here and I don’t know who else is out there; Russians and the Chinese are not going to do much.
I think we have to face the fact that the world or the international community has in fact abandoned most people involved in the struggles, most refugees for instance coming across towards Europe and have been abandoned. There is no hope for these people in consensus amongst the international community.
