Arab League urges release of Palestinian detainees
The Arab League has condemned acts of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners at Israeli jails, calling for the release of all inmates who have been held without charge.
The 22-nation Arab body said Wednesday that Israel should release all Palestinian detainees who have been held hostage for extended periods of time without being able to defend themselves, including Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, who has been on hunger strike for more than 50 days now.
The bloc further called on the international community to take effective measures to help secure the release of Adnan, a leader of the Palestinian resistance movement, Islamic Jihad, and a spokesman for the group.
Reports also say that the Islamic Jihad movement has given Tel Aviv a one-week ultimatum over Adnan's case.
In a statement on Wednesday, Daoud Shahab, the spokesman for the Palestinian movement, called on all Palestinians to stage protest rallies in solidarity with Khader Adnan.
Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned about his deteriorating health, calling for any necessary measures to protect “the detainee's moral and physical integrity.”
36-year-old Adnan was abducted in July 2014 and has since been held under the so-called administrative detention.
Adnan observed a 66-day hunger strike when he was also detained in 2012, sparking a weeks-long hunger strike by hundreds of fellow Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli forces routinely abduct Palestinians across the occupied territories and put them behind bars based on the administrative detention policy, which allows the regime to imprison Palestinians for up to six months without trial or charge and the detention order can be renewed indefinitely.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society, Israel detained 383 Palestinians across the West Bank in December 2014.
Over 7,000 Palestinians are reportedly incarcerated in 17 Israeli prisons and detention camps.
