Turkish authorities have detained two Georgian citizens who tried to enter the country carrying radioactive material, a report says.

A 43-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, identified only as N. K. and I. A. respectively, were arrested with 1.2 kilograms of cesium at a border gateway in northeastern Turkey on Friday, the official Anadolu Agency reported.

The agency said the two entered Turkey by foot from Georgia. Later in the day, officials detained a 60-year-old Turk, and brought all of the three to court.

A waste product from nuclear reactors, Cesium-137 is a highly radioactive material that is utilized for scientific purposes, but could also be used by terrorists to produce a dirty bomb to disperse lethal radiation.

The material was then delivered to the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority.
