Russia is warning that the 2002 US withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty could still trigger a new Cold War.
Speaking at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the US unilateral decision could push the world into a new arms race. According to the 1972 ABM treaty signed between the U-S and Soviet Union, neither side was allowed to build an anti-missile shield. Former US president George W Bush withdrew from ABM claiming the country needed to protect itself from what he called rogue states. Vladimir Putin also accused Washington of seeking to impose its standards and decisions on Moscow and described that as the main problem in bilateral relations. The Russian president, however, expressed his willingness to cooperate with the West despite persistent tensions over the Ukraine crisis.
