US officials say a man has been arrested in New York for allegedly supporting the ISIL terrorist group.

Officials said on Thursday that Samuel Rahamin Topaz from Fort Lee, New Jersey, was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to the Takfiri group.

Topaz will face 15 years in prison if convicted. He was remanded in custody without bail after being arrested at his home on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old is the fourth US citizen in the greater New York area arrested in less than a week for alleged links to the terrorist group.

According to US intelligence officials, more than 20,000 volunteers from around the world, including more than 150 Americans, have gone to Syria to join ISIL.

The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.

US warplanes have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL in Iraq since August last year. Some Western states have also participated in some of the strikes in Iraq.

Since September 2014, the US and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against ISIL inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.
