Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov says it is possible for Iran and the P5+1 group to secure a final deal over Tehran’s nuclear program before June 30.
“There are less problems in [this] round [of talks], and reaching the agreement before June 30 is possible," Ryabkov, who is also Russia's envoy to the negotiations, told reporters on Friday.
According to the Russian deputy foreign minister, there were five to seven issues which remained unresolved.
Representatives from Iran and the P5+1 – the United States, the UK, France, China and Russia plus Germany – are holding talks to finalize the text of a possible deal over Tehran’s nuclear program by June 30.
The two sides seek to reach a comprehensive final deal based on a mutual understanding on the key parameters agreed upon in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.
Ryabkov said that Russia does not “want long-term extensions of negotiations due to political reasons,” stressing that “it would be very wrong to reduce everything to tactical games and maneuvers in the negotiations.”
He also criticized certain parties to the talks with Iran for hampering the negotiations.
“We support the Iranian officials’ appeal to focus on the subject matter, rather than continuing the tug of war between the delegations, which takes time,” the Russian diplomat added.
Senior Iranian nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi said earlier this week that Tehran “will not sacrifice a good and favorable agreement” for the sake of the self-imposed deadline.
He said a valuable deal for Iran is one that would safeguard the rights of the Iranian nation and meet the country’s demands.
