Poland and Lithuania are discussing plans for permanent stationing of US army equipment, officials from the two countries say.

Following a report about storing the United States heavy weaponry in Baltic states in the backdrop of  a crisis in Ukraine, the Polish Defense Ministry said in a tweet on Sunday that Warsaw was also in talks with Washington over the matter.

Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, who recently visited Washington, had been assured about a decision to station US army equipment warehouses in the Eastern European country.

"During talks in Washington in May I have been assured that the decision will be taken soon," the tweet read, quoting the minister.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Juozas Olekas was also quoted by RT as making similar remarks.

The conflict between Russia and the West erupted after Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea voted for reunification with Russia in March last year.

Thousands have been killed, injured, and displaced after Kiev started crackdown on pro-Russia protesters in the east in April 2014.

Last Sunday, President Barack Obama urged the leaders of the G7 summit in Munich to stand up to “Russian aggression”.

The West blames the Kremlin for masterminding the Ukrainian unrest and backing the pro-Russia forces in country’s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a charge denied by Moscow.

Stationing heavy US weaponry on Russia’s doorstep requires an approval from US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and the White House.

If approved, the move would mark the first time since the Cold War that the US is stationing heavy military equipment in the region.
