The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has slammed the United Nations for its decision to exclude the Israeli regime from its list of children’s rights violators.

Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, said Wednesday that the move by the world body to keep the Tel Aviv regime off the list is “shameful.” He also branded the Tel Aviv regime as a terrorist entity.

The secretary general of the United Nations submits a list of violators of the rights of children to the UN Security Council every year.

This year, Ban Ki-moon, the current UN secretary general, was encouraged by human rights organizations to act independently and include Israel in the list due to the war crimes the regime has committed against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The exclusion of Israel came despite calls by Human Rights Watch on June 4 for the UN chief to add the regime to the annual list. The rights group said Ban “can strengthen child protection in war by compiling his list based on facts, not political pressure.”

According to UN sources, Tel Aviv and its allies have been lobbying against the inclusion of Israel in the list, pressuring Ban to leave Israel out.

Ban’s decision also contradicted advice from Leila Zerrougui, the special representative of the secretary general for children and armed conflict, who had recommended classification of the Israeli regime as a systemic violator of children’s rights.

During the latest Israeli war on Gaza, which took place in the summer of 2014, more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians and 540 children, were killed. A UN inquiry found that Israeli airstrikes targeted seven UN schools, killing a total of 44 Palestinians.
