Turkey's opposition slams government for illegal support to Syria militants
The leader of Turkey’s main opposition party has slammed the government in Ankara for breaking the law by illegally supplying arms to the foreign-backed terrorists fighting the Syrian government.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said, “Those who illegally sent arms to (Syria) have blood on their hands.”
Kilicdaroglu further complained that the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, by supporting the Takfiri terrorists, had ruined “Turkey’s prestige” in the world.
In response, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey would do whatever it required to safeguard its national interests.
“Turkey always does and will continue to do whatever its national security requires… We will not let it be a subject of discussion.”
The Turkish official added that Ankara was not the only country supporting the militants in Syria.
“All the assistance is activities carried out together with the international community in the Friends of Syria group... and not Turkey’s unilateral aid,” he said.
In January 2014, local Turkish law enforcement personnel revealed its forces had found weapons and members of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) spy agency on board trucks bound for Syria.
Turkish opposition daily Cumhuriyet published video footage of these trucks showing mortar shells, grenade launchers and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition hidden in them under medicine boxes labeled “fragile.”
Since March 2011, foreign-backed militant groups have been wreaking havoc in Syria, making efforts to topple the democratically-elected government in the country.
Turkey stands accused of overt and covert support for the anti-Damascus militants.
