A senior Iranian military official says Iranian forces monitor the activities of US ships and planes in the Persian Gulf.
Answering a question on the most pressing challenge in the Persian Gulf, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi, a top military adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said, “The Americans might have vicious thoughts, but our intelligence services keep US airplanes and vessels under close surveillance and monitor them.”
The Iranian military official further noted that Iran plays a key role in improving security in the region, adding that Iranian forces are monitoring the movements of foreign countries in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Syria.
“We even monitor US submarines which travel...in the Strait of Hormuz” in the Persian Gulf, Safavi added.
He further stressed that security in the Persian Gulf region should be ensured by the regional states, adding, “Its security has nothing to do with foreigners.”
Safavi noted that certain countries might wish to cause insecurity near Iran’s borders, saying, “But, they know that Iran is a mighty country and our armed forces guarantee the security of the Persian Gulf.”
Referring to the large amount of oil produced in and shipped through the Persian Gulf, Safavi added, “Iran guarantees the transit of oil and security in the Persian Gulf.”
He also mentioned the ongoing tide of violence in the Middle East, describing the US and its regional allies as the “root cause of terrorism” in the region.
On the possible threats that Israel could make against Iran, Safavi said Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah which is in Tel Aviv's backyard is in possession of “more than 80,000 missiles" that could target the Israeli cities of "Tel Aviv and Haifa.”
He said Israeli authorities are fully aware of Iran's capabilities and do not dare attack the country.
He added that Iran is a powerful country and any aggression by the Tel Aviv regime will trigger a “crushing response” from the Islamic Republic.
