Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has called for further development of economic ties and trade transactions between his country and Iran, underlining that the two countries should carry out joint economic plans and investment projects.

During a meeting with Rostam Qasemi, the chairman of the Iranian-Syrian Economic Relations Development Committee, in Damascus on Monday, President Assad stated that specialized committees play an outstanding role in implementing trade agreements already clinched between the two sides.

He added that economic conditions and needs determine the framework of the joint Syria-Iran trade projects which will serve the interests of the two nations.

Qasemi, for his part, said Iran will spare no effort to uplift Syria’s economic situation, stressing that Tehran is committed to maintaining constant coordination with the Syrian government in order to bolster economic cooperation and brotherly mutual relations.

The top Iranian economic official also held a separate meeting with Syria’s Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi, where the Syrian premier urged setting up a strategic roadmap to further develop Syria-Iran bilateral relations.

Halqi said Iranian companies have a special position in the reconstruction of Syria’s infrastructure damaged by foreign-sponsored terrorists.

Qasemi reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for the Syrian nation and government in return.

On April 28, Ali Kazemeini, the commercial attaché at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, said Iranian officials were working on a plan to launch a direct shipping line with Syria in the near future.

He told a delegation of Syrian businessmen that such a shipping line could help increase the level of trade between the two countries, which currently stands at about $1 billion per year. The Syrian side said Damascus is eager to see a stronger presence of Iranian private sectors companies in Syria. They added that Syria is ready to export a wide range of crucial commodities to Iran, including olive, olive oil, cotton and textile products.
