Ukraine army claims to have captured 2 Russia troops in east
The Ukrainian army claims to have captured two “Russian soldiers” in the country’s east, where Kiev is fighting pro-Russia forces.
Military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said on Sunday the “Russian soldiers” had been captured by the volunteer Aidar battalion near the town of Shchastya, which is controlled by the pro-Russians and is located 15 kilometers (nine miles) away from Luhansk.
Lysenko gave no further information on the alleged capturing of Russian soldiers.
Also on Sunday, Ukrainian parliamentarian Anton Gerashchenko posted a video on Facebook purportedly displaying the interrogation of one of the two soldiers captured, who was injured during the fighting and was shown lying in a hospital bed.
The soldier introduces himself as Sergeant Alexander Alexandrov of the Russian special forces from the Volga river city of Togliatti, saying that he had been based in Luhansk since March 6. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
Kiev and its Western allies accuse Moscow of supporting the pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine. Russia categorically denies the allegation.
Donetsk and Luhansk, the two mainly Russian-speaking regions in eastern Ukraine, have been hit by deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in April last year to crush pro-Russia protests there.
More than 6,000 people have died in Ukraine’s conflict, the UN says. Around 1.5 million people have also been forced to flee their homes during the turmoil.
