Italy presents largest exhibition ever held on Leonardo da Vinci

Visitors look at the painting of John the Baptist by Leonardo da Vinci during an exhibition held at Milan’s Palazzo Reale museum, which will be held until July 19, 2015.

The Italian city of Milan has held the country’s largest and most significant exhibition ever held on the legendary Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.

The exhibition is held at Milan’s Palazzo Reale and displays over two hundred artworks from around 100 museums and institutions throughout the world.

Milan’s Deputy Mayor for Culture Filippo Del Corno has described the event as “a project born from a network of relationships enthusiastically and painstakingly created over a long period with the world’s leading cultural institutions, who wanted to contribute to this great event by loaning some 'jewels' from their collections.”

The exhibition is curated by prominent art historians Pietro C. Marani and Maria Teresa Fiorio. It focuses on all aspects of da Vinci’s artistic and scientific career, showcasing his drawings, paintings and sculptures in 12 sections.

The prestigious Louvre Museum, the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the Biblioteca Reale in Turin are among the institutions which have loaned their treasures for the occasion.

The largest number of items, however, has been sent by Milan’s Biblioteca Ambrosiana. Da Vinci’s famous painting, Portrait of a Musician, is among the historic library’s contributions to the event.

The exhibition also features pictorial masterpieces such as St. Jerome, Dreyfus Madonna, Head of a Woman, La Belle Ferroniere, Annunciation and St. John the Baptist.

Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath, whose innovations style influenced Italian art for many years. His Mona Lisa is one of the most famous portraits of all times and his Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting ever.

The Italian genius has also left many remarkable works as a sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician and engineer.

Milan’s Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition will run until July 19.
