ISIL takes government HQ in Iraq’s Ramadi: Reports

This file photo shows the Takfiri ISIL militants lining up a group of hostages moments before their execution at an undisclosed location in the northern Iraqi province of Salahuddin.

Reports say the Takfiri ISIL militant group in Iraq has taken control of government headquarters in the city of Ramadi, the provincial capital of al-Anbar.

Ramadi’s Mayor Dalaf al-Kubaisi said the ISIL extremists took over the compound on Friday afternoon.

He added that the militants are now attacking the Anbar Operation Command, which serves as the provincial military headquarters.

In an earlier development, a police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the ISIL reportedly executed 70 people in the Albu Alwan, al-Thaela’a al-Sharqiya, al-Jamiyeh and al-Sherka districts of Ramadi, which is located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, on Friday, Iraq’s al-Sumaria satellite TV network reported.

The source added that women and children together with security personnel were among those executed at the hands of the ISIL terrorists.

The ISIL militants also fired a number of mortar shells at residential areas in Ramadi. Tens of people were either killed or sustained injuries in the shelling.

Additionally, at least 10 police officers lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries when three vehicles rigged with explosives went off in quick succession in Ramadi on Friday.

The coordinated attack damaged parts of the Anbar Police Headquarters building, a police officer said, adding that two Humvee vehicles seized earlier from the Iraqi army were used in the Friday offensive.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been in chaos since ISIL started its campaign of terror in early June 2014. The terrorists are in control of the city of Mosul, the second largest city of Iraq.

Since then, Iraq’s army has been joined by Kurdish forces, and Shia and Sunni volunteers in operations to drive the ISIL terrorists out of the areas they have seized.
