Kerry will meet with Putin in Russia to convey US views

Kerry will meet with Putin on Tuesday.

US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf says Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week.

"This trip is part of our ongoing effort to maintain direct lines of communication with senior Russian officials and to ensure US views are clearly conveyed," she said in a statement Monday.

The meeting would be the first trip by the top US diplomat to Russia since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine.

Kerry will also meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Sochi on Tuesday.

The two sides are expected to discuss Ukraine, Syria, and Iran.

Relations between Washington and Moscow deteriorated last year after pro-Western forces ousted Ukraine’s former president Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.

The US accuses Russia of providing heavy weaponry and training pro-Russian fighters and of deploying air defense systems in eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin denounces the accusations as baseless.

Russia's Foreign Ministry also announced that Moscow is ready for talks with Washington.

The ministry said in a statement that Russia is “open for cooperation [with the US] on the basis of equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and taking Russian interests into account without attempts to pressure us.”
