George Zimmerman involved in another shooting in Florida
George Zimmerman, the man acquitted in the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, has been shot during an altercation in Florida, authorities said.
The shooting involved two men and happened on Lake Mary Boulevard, police said Monday.
Officers at the scene told local media that Zimmerman suffered a minor gunshot wound.
Trayvon Martin, 17, was shot and killed on February 26, 2012 by Zimmerman, a half white, half Hispanic volunteer neighborhood watch captain.
The shooting death sparked mass protests across the US and intense discussions over race relations in the country because Martin was unarmed while walking to his home with candy and an iced tea in his hands.
Zimmerman claimed he had acted in self-defense when he gunned down the black teenager.
On July 13, 2013, a court in Florida issued a verdict, acquitting Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter in Martin’s death.
The US Justice Department also announced in February 2015 that it would not file charges against Zimmerman over the incident.
Federal prosecutors concluded there was not enough evidence to prove Zimmerman deliberately violated Martin’s civil rights.
Zimmerman was also arrested in November 2013 on domestic violence allegations.
