Iranian security forces have killed a major terror leader operating in southeast Iran, a senior Iranian Intelligence Ministry official says.

Iran’s deputy minister of intelligence for internal security said Thursday that Hosham Azizi was killed in an operation in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan a day earlier.

“In this operation, Hosham Azizi, alias Abu Hafaz al-Balushi, the politico-military commander of the Ansar-ul-Furqan terrorist group and two of his companions were killed,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He added that the terrorist group was founded last year thanks to financial and arms support from some “Western-Arab terrorists of the [Middle East] region” with the aim of spreading insecurity and terror and carrying out explosions in southeast Iran.

Terror attacks and sabotage experienced a relative surge last year in Sistan-Baluchestan with Iran blaming neighboring Pakistan for its failure to reign in terrorist groups emanating from its eastern regions.

In another blow to terrorists operating across the Iran-Pakistan border, sources on Sunday confirmed the killing of a high-ranking leader of the so-called Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group in the Pakistan's port city of Karachi.

Mohammad Saeed Torkaman Zehi, the notorious terror leader who was Jaish-ul-Adl’s spokesman and second in command, was killed by unknown gunmen in on April 7, according to a report verified by Iranian officials.

Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement in February 2013, under which both countries are required to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crime, fighting terrorism, and activities that pose a threat to the national security of either country.
