Move by Saudi Arabia to end Yemen war means defeat: Larijani
Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says Saudi Arabia’s declaration of an end to the military campaign against Yemen denotes the failure of the “childish” offensive.
Speaking at the open parliamentary session in Tehran on Wednesday, Larijani criticized the Saudi Defense Ministry’s statement that the airstrikes have successfully removed “threats to Saudi Arabia’s security and that of neighboring countries.”
Elaborating on what happened during the Saudi military aggression against Yemen, Larijani said, “Firstly, more than a thousand people, including men, women and children, were martyred and thousands were wounded. Secondly, some of the country’s (Yemen’s) infrastructure was ruined; and thirdly, Ansarullah revolutionary forces together with the Yemeni army took control of several provinces in Yemen.”
“The Saudi government should now be asked which of the three was among the objectives of ‘Decisive Storm,’” Larijani said, using the title of the first Saudi military operation against Yemen, which has now ended.
Larijani underlined that Tehran, since the onset of the Saudi airstrikes against Yemen in late March, saw the campaign as beneficial to Israel, and reiterated that foreign intervention in Yemen’s affairs will have no outcome other than a decline in Muslims’ might.
“Wise Saudis must now precisely assess their conduct, [and realize] that such methods will not only have no benefit for their security but will totally lay to waste their Islamic dignity.”
Saudi government spokesman Brigadier General Ahmed al-Assiri, in a broadcast late on Tuesday, announced the termination of Riyadh’s raids, codenamed as the so-called Decisive Storm against Yemen.
However, he added that the Saudi naval blockade on Yemen would stay in place and the Saudi forces would continue targeting the Houthi Ansarullah movement’s fighters in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia started its military aggression against Yemen on March 26 - without a UN mandate - in a bid to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is a close ally of Riyadh. According to reports, about 2,800 people have been killed during the aggression.
