An Israeli military court has brought 12 charges against a Palestinian lawmaker who was abducted by Israeli soldiers earlier this month.

Khalida Jarrar, kidnapped from her home in the occupied West Bank on April 2, faces the charges in connection with her membership in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Her charges include membership of an illegal organization, taking part in protests, and incitement to kidnap Israeli soldiers.

However, the lawmaker’s defense team says the incitement charge lacks any basis, calling it vindictive.

An Israeli army spokeswoman, meanwhile, said Jarrar has been arrested for being the leader of a "terrorist organization" and has encouraged "terror activities" in the previous few weeks.

Jarrar, who was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) in 2006, is one of the most outspoken critics of the Israeli occupation and has repeatedly slammed the Tel Aviv regime’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Israeli authorities issued a deportation order for the Palestinian lawmaker in August 2014, but she refused to obey the order, setting up a protest tent outside the PLC in Ramallah until the controversial order was overturned later in September.

The Israeli regime has been denying the lawmaker the right to travel outside the occupied Palestinian territories since 1988. She campaigned for months in 2010 before receiving the permission to travel to Jordan for medical treatment.

Palestinians reaction

Following Jarrar’s arrest, Palestinian factions slammed the move, with one Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) committee saying it was “an outrageous violation of her parliamentary immunity.”

“Israel does not lose a chance to attempt to break the resistance's will, the people's resistance and their leadership symbols, and Khalida Jarrar is one of those symbols of resistance,” Palestinian lawmaker Jamil al-Majdalawi said.

According to the report, 14 PLC members are currently imprisoned by Israel, with eight of them being held without trial under the so-called administrative detention, which is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

The Israeli regime considers the majority of Palestinian political organizations as illegal.
