Exploring the true meaning of jihad in Islam

Lebanese supporters of resistance movement Hezbollah gather in the southern town of Bint Jbeil on May 25, 2014.

Jihad is an Islamic term that is greatly misunderstood. The non-Muslims fearfully regard it as an Islamic practice that aims to wage war against all disbelievers, to convert them to Islam or to kill them.

To the common western mind, the word Jihad is synonymous with ‘terrorism’ and Islam is a ‘militant’ religion.

In recent times, the term Jihad has been linked heavily with Takfiri groups such as ISIL, but many Muslim leaders have come out and condemned similar groups, stressing that the events in Syria and Iraq are not Jihad.

Many academics and scholars have asserted that the concept of Jihad does not necessarily represent violence and bloodshed.

This is contrary to the dominant public view that many hold about Jihad, that it is only linked with the notion of ‘holy war.’

In this edition of Islamic Awakening we explore the true meaning of Jihad in Islam.
