Iran urges close ties with Russia on key regional, global issues

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani says Iran and Russia must hold close and effective consultation on important regional and international developments.

In a meeting with Secretary of Russia's Security Council Nikolai Patrushev in Moscow on Monday, Shamkhani criticized certain Western countries and their regional allies for their destructive roles, saying they promote warmongering policies and destroy the regional human and financial resources by violating moral and legal principles.

The SNSC secretary urged independent countries to play an active role in the face of the alarming increase in security crises and the institutionalization of violence and extremism.

The Iranian official added that the principled policies of Iran and Russia on strengthening regional cooperation have played a decisive role in handling security crises in the region.

Patrushev, for his part, praised Iran’s effective role in the battle against terrorism and the establishment of regional stability and security.

He stressed the importance of making use of regional capacities to decrease security crises and establish sustainable peace.

Shamkhani and Patrushev called for the expansion of Tehran-Moscow cooperation on the regional and international developments.

The SNSC secretary is in Moscow to attend the 10th meeting of the secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council and hold talks with Russian political and security officials as well as his counterparts attending the event.
