US President Barack Obama has apparently endorsed Hilary Clinton only a day before she is officially set to announce her bid for next year’s presidential election.
"She was a formidable candidate in 2008. She was a great supporter of mine in the general election. She was an outstanding secretary of state. She is my friend. I think she would be an excellent president," Obama said on Saturday in Panama City, Panama.
It has been widely reported by US media that Clinton is set to announce her candidacy for the Democratic nomination on Sunday.
Clinton was the secretary of state during Obama’s first term and his primary opponent before that in the 2008 presidential election.
Clinton is also the wife of former US President Bill Clinton who was in office from 1993 to 2001.
Hilary Clinton has come under intense criticism after the New York Times published a report early in March that suggested she violated federal regulations by using a personal email account for government business, potentially shielding her correspondence from public inquiries.
The email controversy however hurt Clinton’s approval ratings recently. Voters in no state consider her as “honest” and “trustworthy,” but she still runs best overall of any candidate, a Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll indicated earlier this month.
She also reportedly supported terrorist groups who overthrew Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, when she was the US secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.
