Argentine protesters denounce US policies on Venezuela

Argentinians have launched a rally outside the US embassy in the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires to denounce Washington’s policies toward Venezuela, Press TV reports.

On Saturday, scores of protesters took to the streets upon the call of the Argentine workers’ unions, social organizations and political parties, urging US President Barack Obama to remove the unilateral economic sanctions against Caracas.

“By defending Venezuela and its legitimate government, we are defending the rights of all Latin American countries to seek social progress and political independence. The US and its influence in Latin America have been outrageous in the past. That won’t happen again,” Julio Fuentes, the leader of the State Workers' Union, told Press TV.

The protesters also set up tents where they held political debates about the history of the US imperialism and its detrimental influences on the region.

“The Latin American countries need to defend their sovereignty and future by fighting the US imperialist attacks against our region. The latest victim of the US bullying is Venezuela and its government that has been lifting thousands of people out of poverty in the past decade,” said another protester in an interview with Press TV.

On March 9, Obama issued a new executive order to impose sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials. The order also declared Venezuela an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security and foreign policy.

The Argentinian demonstrators also expressed their anger at the White House officials for supporting the British occupation of the Malvinas Islands.

Located about 300 miles (almost 500 kilometers) off Argentina’s coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, the disputed islands have been declared part of the British Overseas Territories since Britain established its colonial rule on the territories in 1833.

The Buenos Aires demo came as Obama attended the historic 35-nation Summit of the Americas in Panama City, the capital of Panama, in a bid to restore frayed ties with the Latin American countries.
