Pakistani religious parties divided on supporting Saudi Yemen invasion

Many religious parties have been holding rallies to support the Saudi deadly offensive in Yemen. This religious leader has called for recruiting thousands of volunteers to join the Saudi campaign. Shia leaders have organized this multi-sects conference to counter the pro-Saudi campaign in Pakistan.

Many other religious parties such as these from both Sunni and Shia sects have opposed Pakistan’s direct military intervention in Yemen. They fear that Pakistani troops may bog down in militancy in Yemen if they join the Saudi-led campaign.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, or JUI, is the major political and religious party from Deoband school of thought. To great surprise of many, JUI has taken an independent stance on the Yemen crisis.

JUI has asked the government in Islamabad to decline to accept demands of Saudi Arabia to help it with army troops, air and naval assets in Yemen.
