AL decision on Yemen sparks controversy among Egyptians

During the two-day Annual Summit of the Arab League Nations, the crisis in Yemen took the center stage. 14 of 22 Arab countries took part in the meetings in the resort town of Sharm El Sheikh, where most of the participating countries supported the ongoing military actions against Yemen’s Houthi groups.

5 Persian Gulf nations led by Saudi Arabia and supported by Egypt had launched a campaign against Houthi groups in Yemen and declared their support for fugitive President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi who fled his country after Houthi groups started closing in the city of Aden, where he and the remains of his government rule from.

Egypt taking part in the military offensive brings back memories of a past similar endeavor when late Egyptian President Abdel Nasser sent 70,000 soldiers during the Yemeni civil war in the 1962. The Egyptian army suffered grave loses in a fight that most Egyptians viewed as having nothing to do with their country.

The Arab league summit came this year amid a full offensive and strong interference by Arab states in Yemen, a risky approach to the ongoing conflict there that many say can get very costly in lives and have ripple effect further destabilizing the region.
