United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says dialogue among all political factions is the only solution to the conflict in Yemen, but stopped short of condemning the ongoing Saudi onslaught against the Arab country.
Ban in a statement on Thursday stressed that “despite the escalation, negotiations remain the only option for ultimately resolving the crisis.”
The UN chief also recalled that the Security Council has called on its member states to refrain from any actions that undermine the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen.
Saudi airstrikes against the impoverished Arab country have drawn condemnation from many countries, including Iran, Iraq and Russia, as well as the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah.
The ongoing Saudi airstrikes on Yemen have so far claimed the lives of dozens of people, including at least six children under the age of 10, according to Amnesty International.
On Thursday morning, forces loyal to Yemen's fugitive president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi seized control of the international airport in the southern port city of Aden.
Troops of the 39th Armored Brigade, who are allied to the Houthi Ansarullah movement, had earlier seized the facility.
Later in the day, Saudi military aircraft resumed bombarding other areas in northern and southern Yemen.
The attacks struck arms depots in the Malaheez region in the northwestern city of Sa’ada, located 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of the capital, Sana’a, as well as the al-Tariq airbase in the southwestern city of Ta’izz, situated about 390 kilometers (240 miles) south of the capital.
