Former White House adviser David Axelrod says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s demagoguery resulted in his victory in Tuesday's elections.
"Tightness of exits in Israel suggests Bibi's shameful eleventh hour demagoguery may have swayed enough votes to save him. But at what cost?" Axelrod said in a tweet on Wednesday.
In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, Axelrod also criticized Netanyahu for mortgaging the future to win his reelection and blasted his reversal on a two-state solution.
He said Netanyahu ran a “very divisive” operation in his campaign, “abandoning his six-year long commitment to a two-state solution to the Palestinian question.”
The Israeli prime minister’s comment that there would be no independent Palestinian state under his watch earlier this week was very crucial because polls showed he was in a tight race with main competitor Isaac Herzog.
The White House also expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s remarks.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Netanyahu’s statement to block the creation of a Palestinian state runs against President Barack Obama’s policy.
"It continues to be the view of the president that a two-state solution is the best way to address those tensions," Earnest said.
"In the context of the recent election Prime Minister Netanyahu indicated a change in his position, based on those comments the United States will evaluate our approach to the situation," he added.
President Obama has so far refused to call Netanyahu to congratulate his victory.
The relations between Obama and Netanyahu have been tense during the past years.
The rift reached rock-bottom earlier this month after the Israeli leader snubbed Obama and delivered a controversial speech before the US Congress to slam a potential nuclear deal with Iran.
