At least 40 ISIL Takfiri terrorists and Kurdish fighters have been killed in fresh fight for the control of the key town of Tal Tamer in northern Syria, a monitoring group said.

The clashes broke out on Saturday after the ISIL militants launched an offensive to take over the strategic town in Hasakah Province from Kurdish forces, leaving 40 casualties on both side, said the UK-based group, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in a Sunday statement.

"Fierce battles broke out during the past 24 hours around Tal Tamer... that killed 40 fighters," said director of the pro-opposition group, Rami Abdel Rahman.

According to Abdel Rahman, the clashes between the two sides erupted after the Takfiri terrorists advanced closer to the town.

The ISIL militants have time and again attempted to capture Tal Tamer due to its strategic position, which would enable the terror group to dominate a key road between the eastern part of Hasakah province and a city with the same name.

By capturing Tal Tamer, the Takfiri militants would also get access to the Iraqi border and fellow ISIL elements currently in control of the major Iraqi city of Mosul and beyond.

According to the observatory, armed battles were still underway near villages of Handarat and Bashkoy in the Aleppo Province between Syrian government troops and the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front Takfiri terrorists.

It further reported that a child and a local al-Nusra commander were killed in the clashes.

Meanwhile, a military source was cited by AFP as saying that pro-government Syrian fighters launched an overnight offensive on foreign-backed militants in Handarat after failing to recapture it last month.

The ISIL terrorists, with members from several Western countries, control parts of Syria and Iraq, and have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all ethnic and religious communities.
