Certain elements in US seeking to ‘destroy Iran, promote war’: Joel Kovel

Joel Kovel says certain elements in the US are seeking to destroy a nuclear agreement with Iran.

American author Joel Kovel has said that certain elements in the United States are seeking to destroy a nuclear agreement with Iran and promote war against the country.

In a phone interview with Press TV on Sunday, Kovel said it is clear that President Barack Obama has “good strategic reasons to normalize relations with Iran and that would be his great legacy in foreign policy.”

He added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some American officials, however, want to “destroy Obama’s wish.”

“Certain elements in the United States, not just in the Republican Party, we have Senator [Charles] Schumer, we have Senator [Robert] Menendez, we have others in the Democratic Party, who would love to destroy that wish of Obama, would love to destroy Iran, who really promote war against Iran. On the other hand, they’re increasingly isolated,” Kovel said.

The author made the remarks while Netanyahu is in Washington DC to address Congress about Iran on Tuesday.

The Israeli prime minister is set to condemn a possible nuclear agreement between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed the Obama administration’s dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s plan to address Congress.

“Obviously, it was odd, if not unique, that we learned of it from the Speaker of the House [John Boehner] and an administration was not included in this process,” he said.

Kerry also reiterated the importance of nuclear negotiations.

"It is better to do this by diplomacy than to have to do a strategy militarily which you would have to repeat over and over again and which everybody believes ought to be after you have exhausted all the diplomatic remedies," Kerry said.

The upcoming address by Netanyahu sparked outrage among some American officials since the US and Iran are in the middle of crucial nuclear talks to reach a comprehensive accord.

Many Democrats have decided to boycott the controversial speech.
