Iran, US start third round of nuclear talks in Geneva

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif (R) sits with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Geneva on January 14, 2015.

Iran and the United States have started a third round of ministerial talks over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The Monday talks are led by Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Iran’s deputy foreign ministers, Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-e Ravanchi, in addition to US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and European Union's Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Helga Schmid are attending the negotiations.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi and US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz were holding simultaneous negotiations, but at the end of their mutual meeting, they joined other negotiators in ministerial talks.

The second round of talks between the top Iranian and US diplomats ended earlier Monday after three hours of discussions. They held talks for 2.5 hours on Sunday.

No details on the meetings have emerged yet.

Negotiations between the Iranian and American delegations on Monday will be the final round of talks.

The Iranian team of negotiators arrived in Geneva on Friday for talks with their US peers over the remaining gaps on the way of a final deal regarding Iran's nuclear program.

Zarif and Kerry joined the nuclear talks on Sunday.

The ongoing talks in Geneva are part of attempts by Tehran and the P5+1 countries  – Britain, France, China, Russia, and the United States plus Germany – to narrow their differences on the outstanding issues over Iran's nuclear program. The two sides have missed two deadlines since an interim deal was signed in November 2013. They have set July 1 as the next deadline for the talks.

A member of the Iranian negotiating team told IRNA on Monday that there had been discussions on the continuation of nuclear talks next week, but the exact date has not been determined yet.
