Netanyahu’s speech at US Congress ‘a stick in Obama’s eye’: US lawmaker

Rep. Jerry Nadler

A US Democratic congressman has criticized House Speaker John Boehner for inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress without consulting President Barack Obama.

"Diversionary debate No. 1 is about Netanyahu's invitation, and that it is a stick in the eye to the president, it wasn't done properly etc.," Rep. Jerry Nadler said in a radio interview broadcast on Sunday.

"All of that is true, and I think it is very bad ultimately for American-Israeli relations the way it was done, but it is not ultimately that important," he was quoted as saying by The Hill.

Netanyahu is set to address the US Congress on March 3 to persuade American lawmakers to put additional sanctions against Iran while nuclear negotiations are under way.

The invitation was blasted by a number of American officials.

President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State John Kerry would not meet with the Israeli leader during his next month’s trip.

A number of Democrats announced that they would skip the controversial speech by Netanyahu.

Rep. Nadler also opposed efforts to impose further sanctions against Iran amid the nuclear talks.

"Nobody knows what's in the deal," he said. "I mean we hear various things but the public doesn't know. And the consequences [is] that if you like and trust President Obama, it'll be a good deal if he signs it. And if you like the prime minister more, it will be a bad deal."
