The Syrian information minister says European leaders are starting to feel the results of their political stance against the Arab country following the threats posed by terrorists on the European continent.
“Europeans have begun feeling the inconvenience of their political stance, based on their actions against the Syrian state,” Omran Zoubi said on Tuesday.
This is not because of the recognition of their erroneous acts, but because of “a fear for their own safety” following the January terrorist attack against French magazine Charlie Hebdo, Zoubi said.
Damascus has already warned that “such a political approach to Syria will bear consequences” like the recent terror attack in France, he added.
The Syrian official also reacted to European sanctions imposed against Syria, describing them as ineffective.
“European leaders thought that the Syrian government would fall apart, that the political foundations of the government would fall,” Zoubi said, adding that “today, they have realized that things are not as they thought.”
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of an estimated 210,000 people, according to reports.
The European Union and the US have imposed several sanctions against Syria since 2011.Washington and some of its allies in the Middle East have also been arming and funding militants to fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
