Uganda lawmakers plan to remove presidential age limit

Uganda ruling party lawmakers are drawing up proposals to eliminate the age limit for presidency. Some of the ruling party members say there should be no age limit as long as the President is able to serve and deliver to the expectation of the people.

Their argument has drawn sharp criticism both from the public and members of the opposition who say amending the constitution in favor of President Yoweri Museveni and his ruling party is a step backward in the democratization of Uganda.

Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo, former leader of the opposition in Uganda’s first multiparty political system, says Museveni should give his place to a new leader.

Uganda is set to amend the 1995 Constitution ahead of the 2016 presidential elections. The opposition is pushing the amendments to restore the two-presidential term limits that were scrapped off in 2005 allowing the incumbent to rule as long as the electorate still rally behind his ideals.

There are also proposals to extend the current five year presidential term limit to seven.
Ruling party electoral commission says President Museveni should be judged by the development he has ushered into the country and not the length of his stay in power.

Uganda’s constitution currently restricts presidential age limit to 75 years. Whether President Yoweri Museveni will endorse this campaign in his favor remains a question of time.

The proposals to amend Uganda’s constitution are expected to be presented to the country’s cabinet and subsequently be debated by the national assembly. But given the fact that the ruling party holds the majority of parliamentary seats, the opposition could be fighting a lost game.
