Netherlands blames state websites disruption on hacking
The Netherlands has blamed a recent disruption in access to several state websites on a cyber attack by unknown hackers.
"The disruption was caused by a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack," the Dutch government said in a brief statement released on the administration's website on Wednesday, adding that it is investigating the hacking.
A DDoS attack is an attempt used to slow down or disable a network by overwhelming it with traffic from multiple sources.
According to the statement, the outage at a number of Dutch government and other websites started at 0900 GMT on Tuesday and lasted well into evening.
Dutch satirical news website GeenStijl and communications provider Telford were reportedly among those sites affected by the hacking.
Dutch political parties have asked the country's Justice Ministry to ensure that government websites remain running even at the time of cyber attacks.
In a previous attack in May 2013, government websites in the Netherlands went offline for some four hours.
