Taliban militants attack Afghan police station

Afghan forces patrol during an anti-Taliban operation in Andar district, February 4, 2015.

Taliban militants have attacked a police headquarters in Afghanistan’s northern province of Kunduz, officials say.

Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, the provincial police spokesman, said the attack was carried out on Tuesday, when a militant blew himself up at the entrance of the station.

“An officer and a woman passerby were injured,” he said, adding, “The situation is under control now.”

Four other militants reportedly attempted to launch a follow-up attack but were killed by security forces.

Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the militant group, said that “several police were killed.”

On February 3, Taliban militants killed six Afghan police officers and wounded eight others in two separate assaults in southern Afghanistan.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues across the country despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.

Although the majority of foreign military forces concluded their combat missions in the country on December 31, 2014, over 10,000 foreign troops, mostly from the US, remain deployed in Afghanistan.
