The international airport in Gibraltar was temporarily shut down following the detection of a suspicious package.

Gibraltar police were called in on Sunday afternoon after a baggage handler said he saw smoke coming from a piece of luggage on a UK-bound plane, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman added that all the 156 passengers and crew members aboard the EasyJet plane were safely evacuated.

Gibraltar police closed the terminal and the nearby border of the self-governing British Overseas Territory with Spain, and people were kept away from the airport until an investigation by a military explosives team confirmed the bomb threat was false.

Both the airport and the border crossing reopened two and a half hours after the shutdown.

Gibraltar International Airport is a civilian airport, where daily flights are carried out to destinations in Britain. The airport is located on a narrow isthmus that connects Gibraltar to Spain; and its runway intersects the only road heading towards the land border with Spain.

Gibraltar has been a bone of contention between Madrid and London ever since it was occupied by Britain in 1713.
